A Trusted Herb for Many Centuries - Calendula

Calendula is an herbaceous plant commonly used in herbal and skincare products. Calendula flowers are orange or gold with a strong, fresh aroma. A trusted herb for many centuries, Calendula extract and petals are scientifically tested to provide a long-lasting, continuous supply of stress-relieving compounds.

Each individual Calendula petal contains five compounds which are Oleanolic Acid, Lupeol, Quercetin, alpha Amyrin and beta Amyrin. These compounds have been studied and are known to provide antioxidant protection, soothe skin and reduce discomfort.

The very effective compound content in calendula helps soothe and visibly improve skin, these compounds also help prevent early signs of ageing as well as dull skin, dry fine lines, and uneven skin tone and texture.

Some skin benefits of calendula include:

Anti-Inflammation:

Inflammation does major damage to the skin, it breaks down collagen, causes irritation, and can trigger skin conditions. Inflammation comes from a variety of factors, as well, from stress, diet, and external factors like pollution and UV exposure. Calendula can be used on different skin types and has been known to help improve inflammatory skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.

Antioxidation:

Antioxidants are a very important ingredient in skincare products, as they neutralize free radicals and help our bodies avoid oxidative stress, both of which lead to premature ageing, collagen and elastin breakdown. Calendula contains carotenoids and flavonoids. Because of these antioxidants, the plant has been shown to help wounds heal faster, plump skin through hydration and circulation.

Antimicrobial:

As you may know, your body is covered with uncountable microbes including bacteria and fungi, collectively called the microbiome. When balanced, these all play an important part in keeping skin healthy. Issues arise when a certain strain (or strains) become overgrown. Issues like dandruff, rashes, and acne are all triggered by the overgrowth of certain fungi and bacteria, which calendula can help manage.

Hydration:

Due to the fatty acids in the oil, linoleic acid provides nutrients to help support your skin barrier function. When your skin barrier function is healthy, it's better able to keep in water and stay hydrated.

Aside from calendula being an addition to skincare products, it is an edible herb that can be consumed as food and tea. What's not to love about it? That's why we’ve infused this highly recommended ingredient in our Herbal Skin Clearing Toner with Calendula, a citrus-fresh tonic that effectively balances the pH and helps close pores without stripping or excessively drying the skin.
